AI, Explained

Chapter 7 of 8

Real or Fake?

Faces and voices can now be faked in minutes. The way through is a habit of checking on purpose, the same four steps every time.

Updated as AI changes. Last reviewed October 1, 2026.

Father’s Day

It took three to five seconds

“I’m ashamed to admit that it took me 3-5 seconds to realize I was watching a deepfake.”

“What was concerning to me is how incredibly convincing the video was. And it is not happening in a vacuum.”

The apprenticeship is gone

Anyone can do it now

“For example, right now, anyone can create a voice clone. In the time it has taken you to read this far, you could have cloned mine. Anyone can create a deepfake from a few seconds of video or a handful of images. Generative AI erased the apprenticeship it used to take to become a forger. Now a free trial account will do.”

The failure nobody warns you about

Doubting what is real

The obvious risk is believing a fake. The quieter one is the reflex that grows in response: deciding that anything that moves you must have been manufactured, so you never have to be moved.

“Calling something “AI slop” is not always a real judgment about the content. Sometimes it is a way to protect yourself.”

“Because at some point, skepticism stops being wisdom and starts becoming a cop-out.”

Gen Z is already living on the other side of this. They verify, then trust

What actually works

A process beats a detector

“What stopped that phishing attempt at that company was not a better tool or system that detected threats. It was a process that made two people get up, walk across the office, and look at each other before the money moved.”

No detector on this list. Detection is an arms race that the forger wins by definition, because the forger gets to iterate until it passes. A process does not care how good the fake is.
